The VTi 50.1 holds 12 × 39 mL tubes, for a total capacity of 468 mL per run. Its vertical tube geometry provides a short radial sedimentation path across the width of each tube rather than along its length. This geometry can reduce the time required to reach equilibrium compared with swinging-bucket or fixed-angle configurations, depending on the sample and gradient conditions.
Applications include plasma lipoprotein separations using the single vertical spin method, density gradient purification of viruses and viral vectors, and DNA banding in cesium chloride gradients.
